Masking tape: 6 tips to avoid tearing your coloring page or swatch chart

There's nothing more frustrating than finishing a coloring page, swatch chart, or creation after several hours of work, only to have the paper tear when you remove the masking tape.

Today, masking tape rolls are available in many stores, at all prices, with a wide variety of colors and patterns. However, the choice should not be based solely on appearance. Masking tape that is too adhesive, of poor quality, or used incorrectly can damage the paper and ruin the final result.

Here are 6 essential tips for using masking tape without any unpleasant surprises.

1. Choose quality masking tape

Not all masking tapes are created equal. Some inexpensive models can be too aggressive for paper, while others lack adhesion and allow ink to bleed through.

It is better to invest in a higher quality product, even if it is slightly more expensive, to preserve your work and achieve a clean finish.

2. Slightly reduce adhesion before application

Before applying masking tape directly to a coloring page or swatch chart, it is advisable to stick it first onto another surface, such as clothing, a clean desk, or a mat.

This little trick slightly reduces its adhesion and limits the risk of tearing the paper fibers when removed.

3. Press the masking tape firmly during application

Poorly applied masking tape can allow ink to bleed under the edges, especially with certain highly pigmented, metallic, or free-flowing markers.

To avoid smudges, it's important to press firmly along the entire length of the tape, especially along the outlines of the drawing or the area to be protected. This helps achieve sharper lines and a cleaner result.

4. Remove masking tape after use

It is recommended to remove masking tape as soon as the work is finished. The longer it stays on the paper, the greater the risk of excessive adhesion.

Ideally, it's best to avoid leaving it on for several hours. Even with good masking tape, prompt removal remains the best precaution to protect your surface.

5. Use a hairdryer if in doubt

If the paper is fragile or the masking tape seems too firmly attached, you can gently heat the area with a hairdryer.

The heat will soften the adhesive and make it easier to remove the tape. Simply heat for a few seconds, without overdoing it, then gently remove the masking tape.

6. Remove masking tape gently

Removal should always be done slowly, without pulling abruptly. It is preferable to peel off the tape gradually, at a low angle, almost parallel to the sheet.

The gentler and more controlled the movement, the lower the risk of damaging the paper.
